Representing Accent

چکیده
In this article I present a formal theory of word accent. The theory separates the representation of primary accent and ‘perceptually strong’ syllables that are due to rhythm (sometimes in combination with syllable weight), the idea being that the rhythmic beats are accounted for independently, although ‘with reference to’ the primary accent location.

Representing prosodic words using statistical models of moraic transition of fundamental frequency contours of Japanese
We have formerly proposed a statistical model of moraic transitions of fundamental frequency (F0) contours and showed its e ectiveness for prosodic boundary detection and accent type recognition. This model represented F0 contours of prosodic words to simultaneously detect and recognize prosodic word boundaries and accent types. This paper proposes a method where prosodic word F0 contours are m...
متن کاملForeign accent conversion through voice morphing
We present a voice morphing strategy that can be used to generate a continuum of accent transformations between a foreign speaker and a native speaker. The approach performs a cepstral decomposition of speech into spectral slope and spectral detail. Accent conversions are then generated by combining the spectral slope of the foreign speaker with a morph of the spectral detail of the native spea...
متن کاملAssessing the efficacy of benchmarks for automatic speech accent recognition
Speech accents can possess valuable information about the speaker that can be used in intelligent multimedia-based human-computer interfaces. The performance of algorithms for automatic classification of accents is often evaluated using audio datasets that include recording samples of different people, representing different accents. Here we describe a method that can detect bias in accent data...
متن کاملPerception of Nonnative Accent: A Cross-Sectional Perspective Pilot Survey
Accent bias is a consequence of ethnocentrism. No studies have examined accent bias across educational levels in the U.S., much less across students and professionals in speech language pathology (SLP), a field that requires multicultural sensitivity training. This study examines nonnative accent perception among three groups—high schoolers, SLP students, and SLP professionals. One-hundred-and-...
متن کاملForeign Accent of Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese –Perceptual Evaluation of Modified and Unmodified Speech–
This paper examines the foreign accent in Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese. In the first experiment, Japanese speech samples of Japanese-descent Brazilians were compared to those of native Japanese speakers, as evaluated by Japanese, and in the second experiment, Portuguese speech samples of native Japanese speakers were compared to those of Japanesedescent Brazilians, as evaluated by Brazilia...
